The inaugural SA Men of the Year Awards were held in 2015 on the 30th November 2015 at Empores Palace where winners of different categories were announced.  The event of 2015 was a great success, attracting more than four hundred thousand public participation, through the sms line.  The 2nd SA Men of the Year Awards were held at the Mosaic Theatre with an attendance of more than a thousand people.  Both events proved to be a great success and reinforced the resolution that these awards should be done every year.  The awards will be held in November annually so as to ensure it coincide with the International Men’s Day and the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence Against Women and Children.  As the awards are designed to transform SA men towards a harmonious gender base society, where women and children are safe from the abuse by men.  The approach is to profile all men who are positive role models within their societies.  The awards are therefore not seen as a competition but a way of identifying good men in the society and to educate men in general on community development and gender equality in the society.  The SA Men Awards cold therefore be regarded as an advocacy and awareness campaign, designed to transform men in the society.

The objectives of the SA Men of the Year Awards are as follows:

To promote positive male role models
To profile positive nation building work by SA Men
To change the negative image of SA Men towards positive nation building

The SA Men of the Year Awards has 9 categories (Health, Sport, Education, Entrepreneurship, Community Developer, Arts & Culture, Leadership, Youth Developer and Science & Technology) and the overall category being the SA Man of the Year.

Community members, organisations, individuals and even spouses or partners may nominate men in the various categories by forwarding the respective category, followed by the province and the name of the nominee to the number 34818.  When nominated, the nominee must encourage people to start voting for him.  This is the first round of voting.  The process of nominating and voting has already commenced on 01 September 2017 and will be open until 15 October 2017.

After the closing date of 15 October 2017, finalists will be selected amongst the nominees who have received the most votes.  All nominees have an equal chance of being selected as nominees must go out and mobilise for votes.  They may use social media, community meetings, church gatherings, etc.  Irrespective of the size of the province, the nominees will not be disadvantaged as it is their responsibility to go out and encourage for votes in all the other provinces through their social media profiles.   The profiles of nominees are also loaded on the Facebook page and website of the SA Men Awards.  (

When the finalists are announced after the 15th October 2017, they will have another change to request votes from the society.  They will only have about a week and a half to get votes as the final date for votes is 31 October 2017.  In some of the categories, for instance the SA Man of the Year category, interviews will be conducted by an independent panel of judges.  The whole process will culminate in the announcement of the winners on 29 November 2017 at Carnival City in Gauteng.

The finalists and winners become part of the SA Men of the Year Awards Ambassador Programmes and are encouraged to continue embarking on community upliftment programmes, initiatives that supports no violence against women and children.
