Northern Cape Older Persons Departs for National Golden Games

The Golden Games for Older Persons project consists of a series of competitive, but fun track and field events for people over the age of 60.  The aim of this project is to improve the quality of life of older persons and their families, and to promote awareness programs with respect to physical and recreation activities and safety on their behalf.

Except for encouraging Active Ageing, it also aims to improve integration between population groups that have historically not had a chance to interact.

Golden Games for Older Persons was first piloted by the Department of Social Development in the Western Cape in 2006, in partnership with the Non-Governmental Organisation, Age-in-Action.  After a presentation at a National Coordinators meeting, a decision was taken to replicate the project in other provinces in the future.  The Eastern Cape joined the project in 2008, with the Northern Cape piloting in 2009.  The ultimate aim of the project is to stage the project annually in all provinces, in order to build up to a “Golden Olympics” which would forge links with international groups
The Northern Cape Golden Games Team with a contingent of 150 participants will be departing for Boksburg on Sunday 20 October 2013 at 10h00 to participate in the National Golden Games Competition from Savoy in Kimberley.

The departure will be preceded with a media breakfast from 08h00 where the older persons will interact and engage with the MEC for Social Development Ms Tiny Chotelo

The media is hereby invited to the Breakfast and the Departure of the Northern Cape Provincial Golden Games Team to Boksburg from the Savoy Hotel.
