The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children is an international campaign. It takes place every year from 25 November to 10 December. The campaign primarily focuses on generating an increased awareness of the negative impact of violence against women and children as well as the society as a whole.
Every year, government, civil-society organisations and the business sector work together to broaden the impact of the campaign. By supporting this campaign, thousands of South Africans have also helped to increase awareness of abuse and build support for victims and survivors of abuse.
The 2013 campaign marks the 15th anniversary of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign on No Violence Against Women and Children in South Africa. It also acts as the Main Social Mobilization tool against the prevalence of acts of abuse against women and children in South Africa.
The main objective of the campaign is to create and increase awareness on victim empowerment services and the negative impact of gender-based violence in communities.
Secondary objectives include the following:
• To show case the human right approach to crime prevention.
• To mobilise communities against gender-based violence.
• To encourage participation of men and boys in prevention of gender-based violence.
• Government to strengthen partnerships and collaboration with NGOs and Community Based Organizations (CBOs) – including those that target and involve men and boys for prevention and rehabilitation -- faith-based organizations, traditional leadership and healers as well as the business sector in crafting a coordination.
• To encourage community involvement in initiatives to combat crimes against women and children, and
• To communicate government’s substantive programmes and priority actions to deal with the challenge of women and child abuse
• To encourage community involvement in initiatives to combat crime against women and children
The Department of Social Development envisages to achieve these objectives by engaging directly with communities in the form of Door to Doors , Community Dialogues and Public Education and Awareness Programs where Gender Based Violence , Abuse of Elder persons , Moral Decay / regeneration with families , role of youth in communities and the role of culture in Gender Based Violence will be promoted and engaged in.
The Provincial Campaign will be held in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District and it will be supported with activities in all districts.
On the 05th December 2013 , the key event will be held in Seoding Kuruman where the Minister of Social Development , Ms Bathabile Dlamini , the Premier of the Northern Cape Ms Sylvia Lucas and the MEC for Social Development Ms Tiny Chotelo will be engaging in round table discussions with Intersectoral stakeholders and the communities on issues and challenges raised on Victim Empowerment and Gender Based Violence.
