International Day for Disabilities - 03 December 2013

Disability Awareness Month is annually celebrated from 3 November – 3 December.  3 December is International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and is also commemorated as National Disability Rights Awareness Day.  The theme this year is:  “Together, advancing towards a fully inclusive society, free from unfair discrimination, equality, abuse and exploitation”

 

The Department of Social Development will be celebrating “International Day for Persons with Disabilities” at two different events:

Date:  Tuesday, 3 December 2013
Time:  10:00
Venue:  Oasis Centre for Persons with Disabilities, Upington

This provincial event will be held in collaboration with the District Disability Forum in Upington and will take the form of a variety concert, where disabled people from the Oasis Centre for People with Disabilities will showcase their talent.  The Keynote address will be delivered by the MEC for Social Development, Ms. Cukelwa Chotelo, while a motivational speech will be delivered by Ms Yolande Malatse; both Ms Malatse and Mr Alan Visage, the Program Director for the day are Persons with Disabilities.  The Departments of Health and Home Affairs are also invited to deliver their respective services; health screenings and Identity Document applications.

The Department is targeting 150 persons with disabilities, as well as their care givers from the following areas:  Upington (Oasis Centre for the Disabled, Etsikelelo Protective workshop and organisations such as, APD, Deafsa, Neighbour-Helping-Neighbour and Isibindi, as well as representatives from Rosedale, Progress, Morning Glory, Paballelo), Kakamas, Kenhardt, Topline, Rietfontein, Mier, Askam and Postmasburg.

The second provincial event will be held as follows:

Time:  10:00
Venue:  Kagisho Day Care for Children with Disabilities, Ritchie

This event will be hosted in collaboration with the Flamingo Casino and will take the form of a fun day for the children of the Day Care Centre, where the challenges experienced by Persons with Disabilities will be highlighted, as well as tribute will be paid to the parents and care givers for the role they play in supporting the children with disabilities.

A total of 100 people are targeted for this event, of which 40 will be the children attending Kagisho Day Care and the rest their parents and care givers.
