War on Poverty - Balelapa Household Change Agent Project: Tackling Poverty One Household at a Time

The War on Poverty Cannot be Won by government alone, but by working together we can make poverty History.

Lincolm Percyville Gibbons:
Was identified as one of the change agents as part of the War On Poverty programme for the current financial year, 2017/18, in the Namakwa district.

Keneilwe Lucrecia Morubisi:
Was identified as one of the change agents as part of the War On Poverty programme for the current financial year, 2017/18, in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District.

Lincolm Percyville Gibbons lives with his foster mother and younger brother in Williston, Karoo Hoogland municipalty in Namakwa district.
Mr. Gibbons was accepted at the University of the Western Cape to study B.Com (general) as well as at the
University of South Africa (UNISA) to obtain a teaching degree. Due to financial reasons Mr. Gibbons was unable to pursue his dreams.
His foster mother attempted to assist him with his first year of studies but as she is only reliant on a Foster Care Grant,
this attempt failed.

Through the War On Poverty programme, Mr. Gibbons applied for a Premier's Fund bursary through the Office of the Premier.
His application has been approved as on 14 June 2017 for a full Scholarship, including accomadation.

If not for the intervention from the War On Poverty programme, this young man would possibly not be able to pursue his dreams
and Wil ultimately make a change in his household and community.

 

Keneilwe Lucrecia Morubisi age 23, is one of the youths who were discovered through our Change Agents program that are conducted through our
War on Poverty program. Keneilwe Lucrecia Morubisi comes from a village of Maphiniki in the Joe Morolong Local Municipality of
John Taolo Gaetsewe District. She lives with a household of 6 people, two adults who are her aunt and uncle and 3 siblings.

The household has no income; it survives through one disability and two children support grants. She completed her matric in 2015,
through difficult challenges; she had to travel from Maphiniki to Batlharos through her high school career which was about 50 kilos on daily basis
for schooling. She is very eager and enthusiastic to study further as she want to bring change in her household and
being exemplary to her siblings.

An application through the Balalapa Wop programme to the Premiers Office afforded her the bursary to study at North West University.
Her application has been approved on on 14 June 2017 for a full scholarship, including accommodation, to study towards Bachelor in
Local Government Development and Management.

Due to insufficient space at the University she is advised by the University to start in 2018.
