In light of the recent scourge of violent crimes against women and children in the province, the Gender & Transformation Unit facilitated a Legal Rights Awareness Workshop on 11 July 2017, in De Aar.

The Workshop covered presentations and dialogue on the:
 - Marriage: Definition of a marriage and Types of marriages (Common Law, Customary Law), facilitated by Mr. Maxwell Van Syfer of the Department of Home Affairs.
 - Maintenance: What is maintenance, Who can claim maintenance and How can I claim maintenance?, facilitated by Mr. Zacharia Mohubuke of the Department of Justice.
 - Domestic Violence: Forms of domestic violence, The Domestic Violence Act and Protection Orders, facilitated by Mr. Simon Dithebe, Thuthuzela Care Centre.
  
The target group for the workshop was mostly women from NGO's doing community-based work.
